The Referendum
I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the reasons that so many UK people decide to buy a home in France.
• In a summer like the one we are having, climate becomes an important reason for buying a holiday home where the sun is so much more certain to shine. It is also very often quoted as the reason for moving permanently to France. Whatever happens with today’s vote the climate will always be better in France than in the UK.
• Property prices are a constant reason for people deciding to move to France. It is still possible to buy a small village house for less than £50,000 and very pretty four bedroomed homes for less than £250,000. If today’s decision is to ‘Leave’ it is likely that the cost of buying a French home will increase due to a falling pound, but however far the pound falls in relation to the euro, property prices in France will still be very attractive to buyers from the UK.
• A desire to return to traditional values and to the importance of family and friends versus the income producing job also makes people want to live in France. Buying fresh food in the market, a cup of coffee and croissant in a pavement cafe, local French friends coming round for aperitifs in the evenings…..these are just a few of the joys that people mention to me when sharing their reasons for considering a French property purchase. ‘Remain’ or ‘Leave’ these joys will still be there for anyone buying a home in France,
So while we all await the referendum results tomorrow let’s just focus on the good things that France has to offer which will remain unchanged by the decision that is made.
