Carte De Sejour For International Property Buyers

Posted by dan123 on January 22, 2023

Once your long stay visa has been approved and you are nearing the end of your first year in France, you may be eligible for a Carte de Séjour, also known as a Titre de Séjour. This French residency card is the second step to becoming a permanent resident in France. Here are a few things you need to know.

When and where to apply?

Non-EU citizens that have come to France to live, work or study, have the opportunity to apply for a Carte de Séjour within two months of your VLS-TS’ expiry date. You must apply before your visa expires, therefore it’s always recommended to start the process sooner rather than later.

Depending on what type of Carte de Séjour you are applying for, the application process can be done online, or directly at your local Prefecture.

What type of Carte de Séjour should I apply for?

For international property buyers, there are two main types of Carte de Séjour:

  • Carte de Séjour Temporaire, valid for one year.
  • Carte de Séjour Pluriannuelle, typically valid for four years.

Applicants will most likely initially apply for a Carte de Séjour Temporaire, after which they will apply for a Carte de Séjour Pluriannuelle.

There are also several other types of other Cartes de Séjour including ‘Private Life and Family’, ‘Visitor’, ‘Student’, ‘Salaried Worker’ and much more.

What documents do I need?

The exact documents will depend on what Carte de Séjour you are applying for, however the following documents are often a staple of any application:

  • Your long-stay visa
  • Your passport
  • Your full birth certificate (translated into French)
  • Proof of address (dated less than six months old)
  • 3 x passport-style photos
  • OFII medical certificate

Where to apply, what type of Carte de Séjour to apply for and the documents needed all depend on your personal situation. If you have any questions, or are looking for some help with your application, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
