Occitanie is a region in the southwest of France that was created in 2016 through the merger of the former Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon regions. It covers an area of 72,724 square kilometers and has a population of around 5.9 million people.
The region is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from the snow-capped Pyrenees Mountains in the south to the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast in the east. In between, you’ll find rolling hills, vineyards, and charming medieval towns.
Occitanie has a rich cultural heritage, shaped by its history as a crossroads between the Mediterranean world and northern Europe. It is the historic homeland of the Occitan language, a Romance language that was spoken throughout southern France until the 20th century. Today, the region is home to many cultural events, including festivals celebrating the local cuisine, music, and traditions.
The region’s major cities include Toulouse, Montpellier, Nîmes, Perpignan, and Carcassonne. Toulouse is known for its aerospace industry and is sometimes called the “Pink City” because of its distinctive pink brick architecture. Montpellier is a vibrant university town with a rich cultural scene, while Nîmes is known for its well-preserved Roman monuments, including the Maison Carrée and the Arena of Nîmes. Perpignan is a gateway to the Pyrenees and has a strong Catalan influence, while Carcassonne is famous for its fortified medieval city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Occitanie is a region of contrasts, with a rich cultural heritage, stunning natural beauty, and vibrant modern cities.
